Customer Personas and why they’re important
Do you often find yourself marketing your product but not knowing where your audience is?
Could you describe your target audience in 2 minutes?
Are you marketing your product already but not getting the results you expected?
Lots of businesses go through a ‘learning phase’ on who, what and where their audience are. They waste tonnes of ££ marketing their amazing product to the WRONG customer.
If for example, I launched a brand-new baby clothing business, made from organic and recycled cotton. I was targeting my audience on a weekday morning on Twitter and found I was getting little to no results. Do you know why? Wrong market sunshine. Twitter is a very heavy corporate platform that’s great for information pieces and knowledge/opinion sharing. Also on a weekday morning, you’re going to find that the target market (mums) will be busy with the weekday morning rush. They’re not going to be online and they’re not going to look to Twitter for baby inspiration pieces.
It doesn’t matter how good your product or service is. If you don’t know who your ideal audience is or where they hang out, then your business is never going to get off the ground. Your audience doesn’t even know about your amazing product!
This is why I always tell my clients that before we dive into the marketing strategies, we first need to identify their PERFECT customers.
The best way to do this is to follow a persona guide to find out
Demographics
Habits
Social Media Basics
Lifestyle
and other necessary information basics. We can then collate this information and create 2-3 ideal customer profiles. Once you know these profiles you will know exactly where to find them (locations, times, tone of voice needed) and you can stop wasting money on unnecessary marketing strategies and focus on the important strategies that mean something to your customer.
